On Display Now at the DFW Car and Toy Museum – An Iconic Ex-Petersen Automotive Beast Built by Hand is Truly a Gem

FORT WORTH, TX, May 07, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Among the most outrageous and awe-inspiring custom builds ever created, the 1923 Ford V16 T-Bucket – Black (Ex Petersen) is now on display at the DFW Car & Toy Museum. This jaw-dropping hot rod is not your typical T-bucket. Built by Al Mathon of Hicksville, New York, this street rod legend features a monstrous 700ci V16 engine, constructed by welding together two Chevrolet 350ci small-block V8s into one fire-breathing beast.

This masterpiece of mechanical imagination breathes through dual Holley four-barrel carburetors and runs on a single crankshaft formed by joining two original crankshafts at a 45-degree offset—delivering eight sequential power strokes per revolution. The camshafts were fused in similar fashion, powering a set of custom-fabricated cylinder heads and dual exhaust headers that roar just ahead of the rear wheels.

Originally acquired by the prestigious Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, this car's pedigree is as serious as its performance. Its fiberglass body sits atop a hand-fabricated tubular steel chassis, with a transverse leaf spring and radius rods supporting the tubular front axle. A custom distributor, paired with a Mallory HyFire ignition system, completes this mechanical symphony.

Nicknamed the "Mathon V16" for the finned valve covers proudly bearing its creator's name, this one-of-a-kind creation is a true tribute to homegrown ingenuity, garage-built glory, and unfiltered American horsepower. It now resides in the Ron Sturgeon Collection, where fans can see it up close and in all its high-octane glory.

Visit the DFW Car and Toy Museum today to experience one of the wildest hot rods ever built.
